Everyone wishes to be comfortable when they are trying to sleep and this section of furniture has evolved in a big way over the years. Many people understand that the very first beds were made from goose down, or feathers. They were simply casings of fabric wrapped around thousands of the softest feathers that one could imagine. While this was soft it was not terribly comfortable because of the fact that there was no support for the weight of the person and they would simply sink into the mattress.A Four Poster Bed

Then came the time when the springs were added and foam was put into play. This did wonders for the bedding world. People were finding a new level of comfort when it came to the sleeping arrangements. Over time though the mattress would become destroyed as the springs started to poke holes through the fabric. This was a problem because there was in turn no support for the mattress under the bed. At this point the box spring came into play.

The box spring had only one role, to support the mattress from below and prevent the rapid wear of the mattress. The revolution in this kind of bedding still stands to this day. The spring loaded mattress and box spring are still one of the most popular styles of bedding that is currently made and will most likely continue that way. For one thing they are not as expensive as the others, which is a big thing for the money minded consumers of the world.

A Bunk BedIn the 1970’s the world saw something new. The water bed came into play and was an instant hit. Rather than a mattress made of springs there was a bladder that was filled with water. The support was great when one laid in the bed and the heater that came with it made the need for electric blankets gone forever. People flocked to the stores to pick up one of these new beds. They are still very popular to this day. People who suffer from chronic back problems normally find relief with the water bed because there are no hot spots like you find with the spring mattresses.

For children there are the wonderful bunk beds. This innovation was a throw back to the early days of ship living when the beds were stacked in the low class sections to make more room. This was a great innovation for people who had more than one child. Making this move the parents could save room that they would normally not have with the single beds.
