There are many types of furniture in the world that tend to have different names depending on where you live. This is easily seen in the sofa versus the couch names. The sofa name is a more high class name while couch is the term used in the middle class areas. The name is used for the exact same piece of furniture.
This is also seen when one is discussing sideboards and dressers. The two names represent the two time periods.
In the early days of furniture these pieces were known as sideboards, because they were most often put on the side of the bed. Bed clothes were stored in these pieces in the earliest days, as the days cloths were most often hung rather than folded. Eventually the name started to evolve into the more common term of today, the dresser.
The dresser is one of the more important pieces of furniture and in truth can be one of the more expensive of them as well. People the world over are always on the look out for more storage space when it comes to their clothing. This is very true when it comes to children as they tend to have twice as many clothes as the adults of the world do. The dresser has been a point of much change over the years. In the early days they were very large and of course very heavy. The woods were solid and the drawers would stand the test of time.
The previous versions of the dresser were most certainly meant to last. The main problem with them was the fact that they were too heavy to manage. They could not be moved easily and could hurt a single person trying too move them. For this reason as the cheaper and more cost effective woods and byproducts came into fashion the dresser was one of the first to get a makeover.
The cheaper and less durable woods were put into play and the dresser became much lighter and far more manageable. Of course they would not stand up to the rigors of a child and the cheaper models would fall apart. In this came a lot of problems as the drawers were usually the first to fall apart. Then came the revolution in the higher quality dressers that are now being manufactured. They use the higher quality and more durable woods, but are made a bit thinner so that they are more manageable. Once again the dresser is able to stand the tests and people are much happier with the results.
